Empowering People and Changing Communities

The Learning Exchange is a welcoming, informal, and lively hub where UBC students and faculty, alongside Vancouver Downtown Eastside residents and organizations, connect, pursue common interests, and learn from each other to bring about positive social change. Every year, around 2,500 residents access programming to develop new skills and confidence which sometimes leads to paid employment or a return to formal education.

This is a place where everyone has something to teach and something to learn. It’s a different way of learning that recognizes both strengths and needs – empowering people and changing communities.
Kathleen Leahy
Director, Learning Exchange

Since its inception, the Learning Exchange has provided free educational, low-barrier, community-based programs and drop-in activities. Every year, around 2,500 residents access programming to develop new skills and confidence leading to, in some cases, paid employment or a return to formal education.
